Refreshing Film Faves

For those that want something different from remakes, sequels, prequels…

Folktales - not exactly a narrative film but one of the most touching documentaries I’ve seen this year. Nestled on a huge velvet chair at Soho House, none of us knew what to expect and were delighted by the stories of these relatable teenagers, each finding themselves through an unconventional gap year as they learn to dog sled in Arctic Norway. These kids bond, learn to sled, live in the wilderness at times, and learn how to be with one another, it is truly touching and utterly unique. The teachers who guide them lead the way and become friends and confidents. The way in which it is shot is so poetic making the landscape a character in itself.

Together - Taking the idea of being literally “together” and placing it in an absurdist cult like, hysterical masterful and brilliant world. This couple move to a new place in pursuit of a new opportunity and start to life. Brilliantly acted, shot in Melbourne, Australia (flattering as a Melb native) and combines comedy and horror in such a refreshing way.

Don’t lets go to the dogs tonight - this may be a personal favourite, told through the eyes of a 8 year old child living in Zimbabwe. The way this film was shot through such an innocent lens, the 1980s colour palette, the brilliant directing by Embeth Davidtz, the dialogue, the intensity of its pace, and the impact of political upheaval is so captivating and touching. You walk away still absorbing this film, it stays with you. The fact it is based on a true story is also insane!
